What is a click through rate (CTR)?
In very basic terms, the click through rate is a measure of how many people view your search result or online ads compared with how many of them actually arrive on your website.
If you are advertising online via banners of PPC you will want to know how many people viewed your ads and how many people actually clicked on the link and visited your website.
If you are optimising your site for search engines, you want to know how many people viewed you in the search results and how many actually clicked on the result.
Why is click through rate important?
Click through rate is an early measure of conversion and you want to aim for as high a CTR as possible. Just getting visitors to your website has some value, as once on your site you can entice them with your proposition. However when doing business online, click through rates are generally less important than conversion rates. A high click through rate does not assure a good conversion rate. I.e just by visiting your site, users don’t necessary buy or become prospects.
